  About Automatic Machining Magazine

Automatic Machining Magazine was founded in 1939 by Howard Spaulding, in Rochester, New York. Mr. Spaulding correctly saw the need for a trade journal catering to the needs of the screw machine industry, anticipated the conflict in Europe and the Pacific, and understood the world's need for turned metal products.

Donald Wood joined the company in 1957 and was the magazine's editor until his death in 2007. You can read one of his editorials on the "Archive of Editorials" page.

The industry has changed significantly over the years and so has our magazine.  The first issue was a mimeographed  10 page newsletter sent to several hundred subscribers.

In July 2009, we made the decision to cease publication of the magazine in printed version and distribute industry news  online.

If you have questions, comments or ideas, we're always interested.

History of the Screw Machine Industry

"Be it known...I, Christopher M. Spencer of Hartford...have invented an Improved Screw Machine..."

Those words, shown on yellowing Patent Office Records dated September 30, 1873 are the basis for the Screw Machine of today. In stating his was an improvement in machines for making metal screws, Spencer tacitly acknowledged the contribution of others. The Pratt & Whitney lathe to which he added a camshaft was equipped with a self-rotating turret actuated by ratchet ad pawl. Its hollow spindle carried an in-motion collet closing mechanism developed by Parkhurst. In short, the art of making screws from bar stock on manual "screw machines" had been brought to a high level of sophistication prior to 1873.
